2019 New Years Resolutions

Before writing this post, I consulted friends and family to gauge their overall attitude toward new year’s resolutions. Unsurprisingly, the response was pretty universal:

“I don’t believe in new year’s resolutions.”

“Why set yourself up for failure?”

“You just feel worse about yourself when you fall off the wagon.”

Bah humbug, right? As someone that believes in the magic of new beginnings, I’m here to say that new year’s resolutions don’t have to elicit an eyeroll. Instead, with the right approach, resolutions can actually work to your advantage.

Read on for my best tips on how to form (and master) your resolutions this year!

1. Focus on one resolution at a time.
“New year, new me!” are the exact words you should avoid. Ditch the laundry list of resolutions and Tony Robbins quotes. Alright, fine, the quotes can stay. However, it is important to focus on 1 goal at a time. Choose something important to you, make it a priority, and do your best to master it before you move onto resolution #2. Experts say it takes at least 3 weeks to form a habit and at least 2 months before that habit becomes automatic.

2. Be specific.
It’s common for people to say things like, “This year I want to eat healthier,” or “This year I will work out more.” Instead, be specific with your goals and you’ll be far more likely to accomplish them.

For example, my #1 goal this year is to be prompt. Well, I’m facing an uphill battle unless I get specific, right?

Therefore, in order to be prompt, I will: 1) Start getting ready 30 minutes earlier than I think I need to 2) Leave 15 minutes before I think I need to (I will set an alarm on my phone for this!). If I’m early or have minutes to spare before heading out the door, that is fine! I’d rather over correct than risk perpetuating a bad habit.

3. Be realistic.
Be realistic with your capabilities and remember that it’s okay to start small and work your way toward your ultimate goal. For example, your resolution could be to save 20% of your paycheck each month. Well, if you’re used to living paycheck to paycheck, you might want to scale that number down. Instead, set aside a couple hundred dollars each month (or whatever you’re able to) and adjust your lifestyle accordingly. Then, scale up when you’re ready.

4. Ride it out.
If you follow the above steps, you’re much more likely achieve your goals. Remember to focus on 1 goal at time, break that goal down to manageable parts, be realistic with yourself, and show yourself a little patience! You got dis. 🙂

What are your resolutions this year? I’d love to hear!

Designer Shoe Sale: December Edit

Let’s talk budget. Ahh, yes, the dreaded ‘b’ word. It’s one of my least favorite words in the English language, yet one of the more important. Inconvenient, isn’t it?

When it comes to creating a wardrobe budget, I generally stick to the following rules:

1. Splurge on accessories – within reason
2. Save on the rest – also within reason 😉

Outerwear, tops, and bottoms are a few areas I prefer to cut corners. Revolve, H&M, and even Forever 21 are a few of my go-tos. Heck, I’m not above Target either. Fashion doesn’t discriminate.

However, I’m more than willing to shell out a few extra dollars on jewelry, handbags and, of course, shoes!  Because, regardless of the price tag, elegant accessories are the easiest way to transform an inexpensive outfit into something you’d see in a designer catalogue. A gorgeous pair of shoes can completely elevate your ensemble, do you agree?

That said, when I’m shopping designer, I will always hunt for a discount. I can’t resist a bargain; what can I say? I think it’s in my DNA.

Read on for my top designer shoe finds this month that all happen to be on sale… yay!

Staycation: Ojai Valley Inn

Are staycations the new vacations? If they aren’t, they should be.

Before you roll your eyes, hear me out. I’m a full time blogger and the co-founder of a marketing agency. I know what it means to HUSTLE. If I’m not working toward my goals, I will starve. Literally. That said, I know it’s so easy to forget that it’s okay to take a break, relax, and treat yoself.

I found that a little time away completely refreshes my psyche. Just a couple days off the grid is all I need in order to return to my job feeling energized, creative, and motivated to work. There’s nothing quite like a change of scenery.

With self care in mind, I challenge you to make some time for, well…YOU. Whether it’s treating yourself to a pedicure or picking up meditation, a little self love goes a long way. For my weekend of self care, I decided that it was time to #KeepCalmAndCallMom. We decided it was time to get away and enjoy some mother-daughter time in Ojai.

Welcome to Ojai

Located just 2.5 hours northwest of Los Angeles, Ojai is a quiet town home to artists, yogis, and local farmers. There is something inherently charming about the town; in fact, every street offers something unique. Chain establishments are prohibited by Ojai city law, which allows local businesses, restaurants, and boutiques to thrive.

Ojai Valley Inn

At the town’s very center is Ojai Valley Inn, a spa-like retreat equipped with an award-winning spa, acclaimed golf course, and luxury villas. Rosemary and lavender line the 220 acre property, setting the tone for that much needed R&R. We couldn’t wait to hit the spa!

We checked into our room and immediately put hotel robes on. Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do when you’re on staycation?

The Spa

I booked a 50-minute “Purifying Radiance Facial” at the hotels gorgeous spa, which uses all Osea products! I’ve used their products for over a year and confidently stand behind the line’s natural approach to skincare. Mineral-rich sea algae is the driving force behind each formula, saying goodbye to damaging parabens, petrochemicals, and sulfates.

My assigned esthetician surveyed my skin and concluded that it was time to unclog my pores and nourish my skin. She performed tons of extractions and my skin looks SO much better after my treatment! I’m still glowing.

While I enjoyed my facial, my mom booked a deep tissue massage. We enjoyed the private spa pool before and after our sessions and managed to order spicy margaritas as well as some standout dishes.

Ojai Valley Inn Spa Pool

Farmers’ Market Salad
mixed greens, romaine, roasted beets, strawberries, candied pecans, garlic croutons, goat cheese, balsamic vinaigrette

Truffled Turkey Club
bacon, brie cheese, tomato, romaine, truffled dijon aioli, sliced sourdough

Bikini by Vix Paula Hermanny

Outside the spa in Sage The Label and Ellen & James

There are bikes all over the property and guests are encouraged to take them for a spin. We even packed a basket with wine and a baguette for a little picnic.

We loved our stay and highly recommend Ojai Valley Inn for your next staycation. What do you do for self care? I’d love to hear your tips!

Let’s Talk About Acid

No, not that kind of acid. I’m talking about the kind of acid that exfoliates, brightens, and tightens the skin. Yass, kween.

All my life, I associated exfoliation with abrasive scrubs. Did anyone else love St. Ives? I had that scrub on repeat in high school.

That said, there are actually two types of exfoliation – mechanical and chemical

Mechanical exfoliation involves a physical, abrasive scrub in a grainy or beaded texture. The technique dates back thousands of years; in fact, American Indians used dried corncobs and ancient Polynesians used crushed sea shells.

Chemical exfoliation removes dead skin cells with acids that assist cell turnover. And it’s all the rage. While technology and ingredients continue to improve, the concept dates back as far as ancient Egypt. It’s rumored Cleopatra bathed in sour milk to reap the benefits of lactic acid. It sounds gross but, like, show up to glow up, sister.

Now that we’ve explained the differences between mechanical and chemical exfoliation, it’s also important to note that not every acid is created equal (le duh). Earlier versions of acid-based treatments made skin visibly patchy and flaky following treatments. The latest formulas, however, leave skin looking firmer, plumper, and the closest you’ll get to looking like your favorite snapchat filter. You know what I’m talking about.

Let’s take a closer look at the most popular exfoliating acids on the market.

AHAs and BHAs

Alpha hydroxy acids, abbreviated by AHAs, derive from natural substances and are ideal for exfoliating dry skin, since they remove the binding that holds dead skin cells together. AHAs are great for dry skin because they’re water soluble. This type of acid can’t penetrate very deep into pores.

Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), however, are oil-soluble molecules. They penetrate deeper into the skin and pores and are ideal for acne-prone, oily skin. Got blackheads? BHAs are your friend. Skincare professionals love BHAs for their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Woo!

Now, within AHAs and BHAs are subcategories that target specific beauty blunders. Get ready.

Glycolic Acid

Derived from sugarcane, glycolic acid is part of the AHA group. It’s great for people with oily or acne prone skin as the molecules gently dissolve dead skin. It’s also celebrated for its ability to reduce hyper pigmentation and fine lines.

Salicylic Acid

Part of the BHA group, salicylic acid is extracted from willow bark and packs anti-inflammatory, anti-acne, and exfoliating properties. The acid is best for oily, acne prone skin but is also recommended for people with normal to dry skin to fight the occasional breakout.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is a gentle AHA derived from milk. It’s an ideal choice for those with sensitive skin as it also has a moisturizing element. Benefits include reducing fine lines and hyperpigmentation.

Absorbic Acid

A fancy name for vitamin C, ascorbic acid is a powerful antioxidant that reduces fine lines while it simultaneously fights free-radicals. It’s great for all skin types and is celebrated for its brightening effects.

Hyaluronic Acid

I was reluctant to include this on the list because it’s commonly confused as an exfoliant. However, hyaluronic acid is actually here to hydrate and plump the skin. It’s the perfect addition to your anti-aging skincare regimen.

The acids I just described are some of the most popular acids in the game and act as a great intro to chemical exfoliation. Without further ado, here are the products in my rotation – I hope you give them a go!

Exfoliating Enzyme Peel
Doll Face, $24

Active Ingredients: AHA & BHA complex combines Lactic and Glycolic Acid to effectively take off the dead & dull surface cells. Natural Pumpkin Enzymes help super-stimulate cell turn-over and vitamin C is an anti-oxidant powerhouse that stimulates collagen production, brightens skin, and helps diminish signs of aging.

Directions: Evenly spread on clean face & neck. Leave on for 3-5 minutes (it will start to tingle!). Once complete, wash face with cold water and follow with moisturizer.

2 of 4

Refine: Peel Away Perfecting Mask
Doll Face, $18

Active Ingredients: Super FruitActiv & Citrus Enzymes brighten and refine skin as green tea reduces inflammation. Hyaluronic acid hydrates and plumps skin. What more could you want?

Directions: Apply to clean face for 5-10 minutes. Gently peel the mask away from the outer corners of your face to reveal replenished skin. Rinse skin with cold water.

Skin Balancing Mask
Goldfaden MD, $75

Active Ingredients: Rich in botanicals, the mask features a multi-peptide and enzyme blend that aids in refining pores while simultaneously making skin appear plumper and feel more firm. Ginseng, Honey, Flower Extracts, Jojoba Oil and Vitamin E infuse moisture, vitality and nourishment back into the skin. The mask leaves your skin looking refined, feeling smooth and appearing flawless. Good for all skin types.

Directions: On clean skin, apply an even layer to face and neck. Leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. For optimal results, use 2-3 times per week.

40% Glycolic Acid Peel for Acne, Scars, Age Spots & Lines
Skin Obsession, $18

Warning: Proceed. With. Caution. I almost didn’t include this guy on the list. If used improperly, you can really burn your skin. That said, please seek the advice of a medical professional before following the directions below.
Active Ingredients: 40% glycolic acid provides a deep exfoliation that cleanses pores, clears blackheads, and fades dark spots. It is also known to assist cell turnover, stimulate collagen, and improve skin texture.
Prep: You’ll need cotton pads or a brush, a skin neutralizer, and a heavy emollient moisturizer to follow the peel.
DIY Skin Neutralizer: You can skip the store bought variety by making your own skin neutralizer. All you need to do is mix 1/2 cup baking soda with 2 cups water.
Directions: Apply to your face using a cotton pad or fan brush. Make sure to avoid active breakouts and open skin. You will also want to steer clear of your eyes, lips, and nostrils. For your first application, allow the acid to sit for 30 seconds max. Next, wash your face with cold water and apply your neutralizer. If your face is still red, continue to cool down your face with cold water. Pat dry and end the treatment with a heavy moisturizer.

Note: Your skin will tingle and will look a little pink. If your skin begins to look extremely red/blotchy, neutralize immediately.

Repeat: Wait 2-3 weeks between performing this peel. In time, you can gradually leave the acid on your skin for longer.
