Beauty Haul: How To Maintain Balayage for Sun Kissed Hair

“I love brass… in my house, not your hair,” says celebrity hair stylist Kristin Ess.

Preach! I’ve struggled to fight off brassy hair for years, especially after balayage treatments.

Bala-what?

Balayage is a French word that means ‘to sweep.’ In the popular technique, the dye is swept or painted onto sections of your hair in a freehand manner. Sections are separated with cellophane, rather than foil.

This particular method of hair coloring yields very gradual, natural looking highlights. And, once your hair grows out, the contrast between the roots and dye is much more subtle. Win-win.

I like balayage because it mimics the sun kissed hair from days spent in the sun during my childhood. However, the downside is that if I’m not careful, my hair will turn rather brassy. Yikes!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with brassy hair, it’s that dreaded orange tone that appears after the hair has been dyed, processed, and highlighted.

Why does this happen? Hair color is made up of balanced molecules and when they are not in balance, the warm undertones will begin to show. This holds true for all hair colors, see the chart below!

I range between light brown and lightest brown, meaning the primary contributing pigment is red-orange or orange.

My hair tends to get brassy when:
– I use a shampoo full of sulfates and other harmful chemicals
– I spend a day at the beach without a hat or hair protection (which is why I have hair SPF, see below!)
– The dye begins to fade

Even if my hair gets brassy, I know I can count on purple shampoo to correct the hair color.

Why purple shampoo!?
Purple is opposite of yellow on the color wheel, so the longer you leave it in your hair, the more it will balance out the warm tones.

If you’ve never used purple shampoo before, I would start with once a week and increase use as needed. It is highly drying, so you’ll also want a good conditioner or mask to follow the treatment.

I’ve tried a ton of different purple shampoos and it’s been difficult to settle on one that meets the following criteria:
– Affordable
– Accessible
– No sulfates, parabens, or chemical smell

FINALLY, Kristin Ess came out with a purple shampoo and it did not disappoint. It’s only $12, which is under half the cost of other varieties I’ve tried. Also, it has no sulfates, parabens, or aluminum. There is no chemical smell AND, lastly, it’s available at Target. Easy peasy.

Below, I included Kristin Ess’ purple shampoo, as well as the other products I swear by! A couple standouts include Klorane’s non-aerosol dry shampoo and a great hair SPF by SunBum! I hope you try these products and love them as much as I do!

London City Guide: What To See, Eat, Wear, and Do

Let’s talk about bucket lists — we all have one. A fortunate number of us have checked off our top dream destinations, collecting passport stamps and unforgettable memories along the way.

But… let’s be real. Traveling is expensive, paid time off is scarce, and sometimes jetting off into the sunset just isn’t in the cards.

What’s worse, it seems like you can’t login to Instagram without seeing so-and-so on their umpteenth trip to the Bahamas. We all know the feeling.

With that said, I’m a firm believer that if you want something badly enough, you will make it happen. So, I took a look at my bucket list and decided to stop dreaming and start planning.

Now… where to go? For me, the choice was an easy one. England met the following criteria:

  • Easy, direct flight from Los Angeles to London (Air New Zealand, you’re the best!)
  • English as native language
  • Rich history to soak in

Oh, and let’s not forget to mention that March is the perfect time to visit Great Britain! The temperates are mild, the parks are in bloom, and it’s just before the rush of tourist season. And, whether you’re single, married, or have a family, England offers something special for everyone.

I teamed up with Air New Zealand, Visit Britain, and a few awesome travel bloggers to experience the best of Great Britain. I cannot wait to share my visit, and it all starts with Air New Zealand.

Below I included some of the trip highlights, I hope you enjoy it!

Sometimes, the journey is as magical as the destination. This was the case when traveling with Air New Zealand. We began our journey with a champagne toast, then transitioned to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc – my favorite type of wine!

Now, let’s take a peak at the cabin. Each passenger enjoyed a fully reclinable seat, with the option to fold it into a bed. Our accommodations made for quite a cozy travel across the Atlantic.

While we’re at it, we should probably talk about the food. This plane’s food was anything but plain food. I enjoyed a gourmet appetizer (above), followed by the most delicious gnocchi! In fact, it was so good that I consumed it before I was able to sneak a photo!

The journey to London took about 12 hours, which flew by (no pun intended). I was able to sleep for most of the flight…shocker.

And alas, we arrived!

1. Courthouse Hotel Soho

Upon arrival, we checked into Courthouse Hotel Soho. Located in Central London, the hotel is walking distance from all the city’s major shopping destinations, tourist attractions, and more. As the name suggests, the building used to be a courthouse – jail cells and all!

The rooms were spacious, clean, and provided all the amenities a girl can’t live without (read: hairdryer, coffee machine, iPhone charger cable, etc).

The hotel also has a fabulous, complimentary breakfast which I found to be key to fuel me through all the activities we planned.

2. Danesfield House

On our third day, we checked into the Danesfield House Hotel and Spa, located between Marlow and Henley-on-Thames in Buckinghamshire. Though it’s located just 30 minutes from central London by train, the countryside offered a completely different feel than the bustling heart of London.

The hotel is surrounded by 65 acres of landscaped gardens, and would make for a beautiful wedding destination. In fact, George and Amal Clooney held a post-wedding bash at the property, and rented out the entire hotel to house their guests.

Built in 1901, the Danesfield House possesses the same charming antiquities from the original build, with all the high-end modern conveniences in the suites.

Everything from the shower to the toilet seats have manual temperature controls, if that gives you an idea of how modern the interior is! Also, I love a good tub. Baths are kind of my thing, and I took advantage.

3. Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch

On day 3 of our trip, we checked into Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch, which had a verrry different vibe than Courthouse Hotel Soho. The Courthouse Hotel in Shoreditch is much more modern with a greater luxury feel.

In the hotel’s lower level is the famous Jailhouse Bar, which offers a unique way to experience the building’s dark history. As you can see in the image above, the jail cells still remain, now with comfortable seating and craft cocktails.

1. Prêt-à-Portea at The Berkeley
Aternoon tea at the Berkeley was unlike any other high tea I’ve tried. The pastries are inspired by fashion week trends (see below). The tea comes with miniature savoury skewers, taster spoons, elegant canapés and tea sandwiches. I enjoyed rose loose leaf tea, but they also offer matcha, coffee, or even hot cocoa if tea isn’t your thing. Oh, and of course champagne!

When you order matcha, the server will make it at the table!

2. sketch
Do it for the ‘gram. sketch is easily one of the most popular hot spots in London, and for good reason. The food was remarkable and the setting is wildly unique. Take a look for yourself!

Every room is more memorable than the last, including the toilets! Each toilet is inside of an egg. The experience was surreal, as if it were something from a movie.

All pink everything. From the food to the ambience, sketch is a MUST see for all. We went for brunch, and I enjoyed truffle scramble eggs and let’s just say they did not disappoint.

3. Dinner at Millie’s Lounge in The Ned

Owned and operated by Soho House, The Ned is a gorgeous hotel home to high end bars, top-rated restaurants and hip hangouts. Dinner at Millie’s Lounge was my first taste of what it would be like as a London local. We arrived on a Monday night, a time when young professionals were off work and ready to loosen their ties for cocktails and live music.

4. Bel and The Dragon, Windsor

Located in Windsor, Bel and The Dragon was everything I’d imagine a hearty lunch in the countryside to be. The restaurant is cozy, a bit rustic, and ever so charming.

I ordered the gnocchi, which was prepared with roasted sun dried tomatoes, artichoke, peas, and sage. It was delish!

1. Champagne Experience at The London Eye

The tallest ferris wheel in the world, the London Eye offers 360 views of the entire city. This is universally regarded as a must and I couldn’t agree more.

2. Sky Garden

Sky Garden is a rooftop bar with an all-day drinking and dining experience with some of the best views of the city!

3. Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is an obvious must-see. With buzz circling around the upcoming royal wedding, there was a special energy surrounding the Queen’s lair.

Fun fact: it’s the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world!

4. Walk the streets of Shoreditch

Known as the creative hub of London, Shoreditch felt a bit more like Los Angeles than the rest of the city. The hip neighborhood is home to artists and producers, and isn’t short of inspiration. We strolled the neighborhood and explored record stores, vintage thrift stores, and other cool spots like Cereal Killer. See below!

5. Boat Ride Along The Thames River with The French Brothers

Experience one of the best views of Windsor and the Castle with a 40 minute excursion from Windsor boat trip on the Thames. There were hundreds, if not thousands of swans along the river. In England, the legacy of the swan dates back centuries and denotes wealth and aristocracy. I couldn’t help but notice the recurring theme in paintings, interiors, and more. Even more interesting: the Queen owns all of the UK’s swans! They’re counted every year in what’s referred to as “Swan Upping.”

6. The Churchill Arms

Built in 1750, the famous pub was a regular hangout for Winston Churchill’s grandparents. Enjoy a British beer among Churchill memorabilia in this famous joint.

How To Wine Taste at Home Like A Pro

If you want to know the key to my heart, look no further. I am alllllll about cured meats, an assortment of cheeses, and some great wine to boot. Add some sweet and savory bites in between, and what results is the perfectly curated spread.

Before we dive in, let me clear the air: I’m a far cry from a sommelier. I do, however, greatly enjoy exploring different wines as I continue to refine my palate. Although my preferences seem to evolve with age, I will always appreciate the velvety finish of a Pinot Noir during the winter. As the weather warms up, you can usually find me sipping a crisp glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

That said, we can probably all agree that wine can be a bit of a hit or miss. Sure, we can refer to user-generated reviews on apps like Vivino or Wine Spectator, but taste will always be unique to the individual. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve sampled a well-received wine and just felt, well…. meh.

There’s no better way to learn about wine than by wine tasting. However, we don’t all have access to vineyards and, even if we do, we’re often limited to sampling wine from one particular clime.

This is where Vinebox comes into play.

What It Is: Vinebox offers wine by the glass, delivered straight to your door. For just $25, you’ll receive three glasses of wine from all over the world based on your flavor preferences.

How They Do It: Your perfect glass of wine is extracted from the original bottle in a closed-nitrogen environment. Inert gas keeps your glass of wine in optimal conditions for up to three years (though I recommend enjoying your wine sooner).

Each wine comes with a note card indicating fruity notes, food pairings, and more.

This post is sponsored by Vinebox. All opinions are my own.

Rockwell Routine: Osea Malibu Skincare

Skin – it’s our largest organ and the first line of defense against this crazy world we live in. As you likely know, the porous nature of our skin means it maintains the unique ability to absorb pretty much anything we apply topically.

You may also know that both affordable and high end cosmetic manufacturers typically add harsh chemical ingredients into their products that fail to nourish the skin. BUT, did you know that these very harmful additives (think: sulfates, alcohols, artificial fragrances) can actually make your skin worse? Not only do these ingredients parch your skin, but also they greatly contribute to premature aging. *insert frown emoji*

That said, I’ve searched near and far for a natural product line that would do what every skincare line should: hydrate, brighten, and protect the skin.

Lately, I’ve been absolutely OBSESSED with Osea Malibu Skincare. Not only does each product smell incredible, but each formula works. Before I turn into a walking infomercial, let’s jump into the products I’ve tried so far:

  1. Osea Brightening Serum: This formula gets its natural golden color from the Bearberry Leaf, a potent botanical chock-full of antioxidants. Also inside: organic algae, ferulic acid, Vitamin C, Japanese Knotweed, and Matsutake Mushroom. These organic ingredients work together to reduce hyper-pigmentation, revealing a bright, glowy complexion. Oh, and you can pronounce all the ingredients. I calculate a win.
  2. Osea Atmosphere Protection Cream: Lightweight and silky to the touch, this daily moisturizer is the perfect base prior to makeup application. The natural fragrance of lavender and geranium fill the air, instantly transporting me to a luxurious hotel spa. The key hydrating elements include organic algae, shea butter, and avocado oil. Bon appetit.
  3. Osea Essential Hydrating Oil: I hate to play favorites, but this might be it. Similar to the Atmosphere Protection Cream, this delivers lavender and geranium notes, this time with a subtle hint of rosewood. Jojoba and sesame oils are the key components that make this ultra-hydrating oil a winner.
  4. Osea White Algae Mask: This stuff is too good not to share. My roommate Monica and I love to use this as an overnight cream a couple times a week to give our skin that much needed TLC. It hydrates as well as reduces redness and uneven skin tone. The calcium rich formula contains the following ingredients: white algae, copper, manganese and zinc peptides, white wine extract, white tea, macrocystis kelp, pear and raspberry enzymes, and licorice root extract.

Okay, you guys, I’m DYING to know what skincare products you have on repeat. I’ve always placed emphasis on word of mouth, and would greatly appreciate your input! Feel free to leave a comment below – let’s chat!

Advice To My Younger Self

Birthdays, they seem to sneak up so fast, don’t they?

Prior to turning the big 2-5, each passing birthday felt no different than any other day of the year. Even life’s most celebrated milestones felt rather mundane.  When I finally turned 21, I had already abused the hell out of an unstoppable fake ID. In short, bar hopping with girlfriends was nothing new.

However, things started to change when I turned 25.

Suddenly, time escaped me. It felt as if my Facebook feed transitioned from graduation announcements to engagement posts overnight.

I wouldn’t say I experienced a quarter life crisis; in fact, I would instead call it a quarter life awakening. I know, I know. Before you roll your eyes so far back they get stuck, hear me out.

I decided life is too short. Life is too short to care what people think. Life is too short to delay personal goals and aspirations. Life is too short to seek validation and self-worth through a significant other.  I decided it was time to wake up. And I’ve experienced a tremendous amount of self growth in the process.

To my younger readers, I wanted to share some tips I would tell young Taylor.  These tips aren’t meant to be preachy; in fact, they’re straight from the heart and intended to nudge you in the right direction should you need it.

Without further ado, here are my best tips toward self betterment…

Trim the fat.
I borrow this term from one of my best friends, Amber. “Trim the fat” implies ridding your life of the unnecessary excess. In this particular case, I refer specifically to people that do not serve you. This could mean a friend, or even family. *gasps*.

Sometimes, no matter how much you love someone, their intentions are not to lift you up or support you. Over the past few years, I’ve had to make painful choices. I broke up with a serious boyfriend and stopped talking to one of my closest friends at the same time. I’m not going to lie… it was really hard. Through the process I learned that ultimately you want to surround yourself with people you admire, whose values align with yours. Trust me, hindsight is 20/20. You’ll feel so cleansed and wonder why you tolerated being treated less than you deserve in the first place.

Since then, I have become very selective of who I choose to spend my time with, and…guess what.. so should you! Time is the most valuable currency in the world. Don’t waste it on people that do not lift you up or have your best interest in mind.

Get rid of the clutter.
This is one of the best pieces of advice I can give. It seems simple, but you really can’t comprehend the benefits until you actually do it.

I feel mentally clear and focused when my life is organized and structured. Marie Kondo, a professional Japanese organizer and author of “The Life Changing Method of Tidying Up,” breaks it down so simply. When you reach for something in your home, ask yourself “does this item bring me joy?” If the answer is yes, keep it. If you hesitate or say no, donate or discard it.

I recently donated about 7 trashbags of clothing and several boxes of trinkets/items I don’t use or need. Now, I can see everything in my closet and my drawers are incredibly neat. Every item has a home or place, meaning I am no longer misplacing things.

Rid the notion of “I’ll never see them again.”
We live in the digital age. We’re all connected in some way, shape, or form. That guy you flashed in college or girl you accidentally puked on at a sorority party could be your future boss. It sounds like a stretch, but I’ve learned life has a funny way of working out and things always come full circle. Conduct yourself accordingly.

Believe in yourself and confidence will follow.
I liken this analogy to sales. If you don’t believe in the product you’re selling, how will you convince yourself (or anyone else) of its value? If you’re feeling particularly insecure or unhappy, it’s time to step back and reflect.

List five things you admire or love about yourself. It can be anything. Write it down and repeat it to yourself every day. **Do not focus on physical attributes.** Positive manifestation yields positive results.

Another good way to think about this is “be the type of person you’d love to meet”. Read the news. Be able to articulate an opinion. Have hobbies and interests. Invest in YOU. The more you do, the more self love will follow.

Invest in experiences over things.
Invest in what can never be taken from you. If the economy tanks or a natural disaster hits, ask yourself what kind of intangible wealth will remain. For me, it’s my education and experiences. No one can take either away from me. $10,000 can either mean a Rolex on your wrist or a European vacation you’ll remember for a lifetime. The choice is yours.

Fake it till you make it.
Lastly, fake it till you make it! The most valuable life lessons cannot be taught, but rather they are experienced. Life is all about trial and error. Do new parents feel prepared for their unborn child simply from reading parenting books? Absolutely not. Every situation is unique to you, and it’s just about doing the best you can. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and follow your dreams, feet first.

What are some of the most valuable life lessons you’ve learned? Let’s chat!
