Cut The Rut: How I Motivate Myself To Stay In Shape

They say the hardest part about working out is putting on your shoes.

When we’re out of routine, it can be difficult to muster the energy (or desire) to exercise. However, I’ve found that it’s critical to squeeze in a workout, no matter how small. For some, this could mean signing up for a morning spin class; for others, it could be as simple as taking the stairs in lieu of the elevator.

Not only is physical exercise a critical component of weight management, but also it’s arguably the best stress reliever. But, let’s be real, you don’t need me to tell you that.

However, did you know that aerobic exercise positively affects the brain to a greater extent? From a molecular to behavioral level, the brain greatly benefits from physical exercise. A study published by the Department of Exercise Science at the University of Georgia reveals that exercising for as little as 20 minutes increases both memory function and information processing.

Aerobics increase heart rate, pumping more oxygen to the brain. Brain cells also release feel-good hormones like endorphins, all of which participate in aiding and providing a nourishing environment for the growth of brain cells.

In the wise words of Elle Woods,”Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t kill their husbands. They just don’t.”

In short, don’t kill your husband. Go to a spin class instead.

As mentioned, it can be difficult to get back into routine after a hiatus. If you’re needing a little nudge, I have a few tricks up my sleeve that may work for you too.

Work Out Motivating Tips:
1. Treat Yourself to a cute athletic top or new pair of shoes. To me, a new pair of running shoes feels like a fresh start. And, you’ll be excited to wear your new digs, getting you one step closer to the gym.
2. Drink pre-workout. I love the energy boost from a pre workout drink. I swear by Vega Sport, which is all natural and plant based (see below!). It takes 20 minutes to kick in, and you will feel stir crazy if you don’t get moving! This trick works for me every time.
3. Sign up for a group glass with a cancellation fee. This is a surefire way to get your butt moving and prevent you from bailing.
4. Find a workout buddy to keep eachother accountable.
5. Create a new playlist. Find songs that will motivate and energize you. The same songs you’ve been listening to on repeat for weeks probably won’t make your workout any more fun. Start the playlist with songs you can listen to after you take your pre-workout while you’re getting dressed. Set the mood to get pumped up!
6. Lastly, think about how good you’ll feel afterward. All you have to do is lace up your shoes, this is the hardest part, after all. 😉

Under $100: Summer Fashion Trends

This summer, fashion returns to the soft, feminine woman. To my delight, the colors, style lines, shapes, and intricate details display utmost femininity in an unmistakable way. From gingham to voluminous sleeves, SS17 looks depart from the masculine, androgynous looks we’ve grown accustomed to over the past few years.

Dress, Forever 21 (short version sold out, see maxi version here)

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be the first to admit I love a great leather jacket, pair of Converse and Levis. To me, these are staples. However, there is something inherently refreshing about the trends this season. To me, it symbolizes that society finally recognizes that women do not need to dress like men in order to be perceived as equals. In short, give that power suit a much needed break. It’s time to feel sexy again!

Even better, there’s no need to break the bank in order to adopt these trends. Unfortunately, the dress pictured above was sold out by the time I could get to this post (only a few days!). However, I will share what’s in my shopping cart for this season (everything is under $100!)

What are your favorite trends this season?

Fall in Love With Lake Arrowhead

Fall in Lake Arrowhead

First, I’d like to encourage a moment of silence, you know, so we can all appreciate my painfully cheesy Will Ferrell moment.

Without further ado, I’d like to welcome you to Lake Arrowhead! For those of you that haven’t had a chance to visit, Lake Arrowhead is a charming town tucked 80 miles east of Los Angeles in the San Bernardino National Forest.

In just an hour and a half, palm trees disappear, and the sweet smell of pine and cedar fills the winding mountain roads. For me, it’s just far enough away from the bustling heart of Los Angeles. I often visit to unplug, unwind, and breathe in the tranquil scenery.

Fall in Lake ArrowheadAs the weather drops into freezing temperatures, you can find me bundled up in my family’s cozy cabin alongside a warm fire accompanied by a glass of wine and some great company.

When the weather is warmer, the lake is a beautiful place to hike, go out on the boat, or have a quiet little picnic. Without one person in sight, it’s the ideal setting to roll out a comfy blanket, whip up some charcuterie and, of course, a great cocktail to pair. During my last visit, I revisited one of my all time favorite recipes, here.

In the coming weeks, I will return to my favorite southern California escape. I can’t wait to share my next adventures with you all!

Grapefruit Rosemary Cocktail

Grapefruit Rosemary Cocktail | Rockwell

I’m the kind of girl that eats rather indiscriminately. I’m not a picky eater; in fact, in the words of Mae West, I’ll “try everything once, twice if I like it, and three times to make sure.” I’m a foodie at heart — what can I say?

Sadly, my palette isn’t quite as forgiving when it comes to happy hour. I know which alcohols suit my palette and I dare not stray. And, when it comes to cocktails, the standard, store-bought premixed varieties simply will not do. Not only do these sugary mixes boast a serious caloric overload, but also they rob of key notes and flavor pairings. Needless to say, they guarantee a nasty hangover, too.

Above all, I favor a cocktail that delivers fresh, clean flavors. This cocktail is just that: bright, elegant and, most importantly, delicious!

To make this cocktail, first you’ll need to make your own simple syrup. It sounds daunting, but it’s actually one of the easiest things in the world. Let’s get to it…

Rosemary Simple Syrup
Ingredients
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
2 sprigs rosemary

Directions
Combine all three ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally until sugar is dissolved and syrup is boiling. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.

Cocktail: Makes 1
Ingredients
1/2 red grapefruit, juiced
2 oz. gin (vodka would also make an excellent pairing!)
1 tsp. rosemary simple syrup
1 sprig rosemary (for garnish)
1 tsp. lemon juice
Ice

Directions
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Return the lid and shake vigorously until cocktail is chilled, about 15 seconds. Strain into a martini glass or champagne coup. Top with a sprig of rosemary (a lemon wedge would also work nicely). Ready to serve; cheers!

A Vegetarian Taco Tuesday

A Vegetarian Taco Tuesday | Rockwell

Earthy in flavor and meaty in texture, mushrooms are the ideal meat substitute for your Taco Tuesday soiree. Though I do not subscribe to an all-vegetarian diet, I do make sure to incorporate meatless meals into my culinary agenda. After all, it’s better for the health and welfare of not only animals, but our planet as a whole. You can read more about that here.

My fellow meat lovers, do not fret. These tacos are tried and true and fully approved by my fellow carnivores. Read on for this tasty, effortless taco recipe.

Vegan White Bean Vegetable Soup | Rockwell

For the “meat”
Serves
4-6
1 lb mushrooms, sliced
1-2 tbsp. olive oil
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 tbsp. cumin (feel free to use more!)
1 tsp. smoked paprika
1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
salt, pepper

Directions
Heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add garlic, cumin, smoked paprika and cayenne pepper. Add mushrooms and stir occasionally. Cook until mushrooms begin to soften, about 8 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Now, when it comes to tacos, anything goes. This is where you can be creative! However, these are the ingredients I used:
Corn tortillas
Diced scallions
Chopped cabbage
Grated cheddar cheese
Non-fat sour cream
Roughly chopped red bell pepper
Diced tomatoes
Cilantro
